Bulgarian Felted Textiles – A Message from Antiquity
On behalf of the Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv, we are pleased to invite you to the opening of the national exhibition “Bulgarian Felted Textiles – A Message from Antiquity”. The event will take place on June 24, 2024 at 18:00.
The exhibition presents felted products from all over the Bulgarian territory, collected from six museum institutions: National Museum of History – Sofia, Institute of Ethnography, Folklore with Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Directorate of Museums – Koprivshtitsa, Regional History Museum – Vidin, Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv and National Museum “Rila Monastery” and aims to show the richness and diversity of traditional felt products, as well as their significance in Bulgarian culture and history.
The archaic technique of felting preserves centuries-old practices, the beginning of which starts from the nomadic way of life and culture. The magic of this intangible cultural heritage is preserved and passed on from generation to generation through the coded signs, symbols, and inscriptions on the felted carpets. In the exhibition, you will see felted textiles that show these products’ beauty and richness in their variety of colours, ornaments, and compositions.
The national exhibition aims to present to the general public this ancient craft, which has survived in time and preserved to this day, to promote it in Bulgaria and outside of our country and to help revive the ancient tradition.
Visitors can view the exhibition until October 25, 2024.
Welcome!
