Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv Hosts Martenitsa Workshops
This year, the initiative is organized in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bulgaria and the “Spectrum 21st Century” Association.
On the eve of March 1st, the Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv is organizing traditional martenitsa-making workshops dedicated to one of the most beloved Bulgarian customs. On February 27 and 28, 2026, the museum will open its doors to children and parents, who will have the opportunity to experience the magic of the red-and-white symbols of health, prosperity, and new beginnings.
This year, the workshops will also feature international participation. The handmade martenitsas will symbolically travel to Moldova as part of a joint initiative with representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bulgaria and the Association for Cultural Products and International Exchange “Spectrum 21st Century.” Participants will also learn more about the Moldovan spring tradition of Martisor, which is similar in meaning and symbolism to the Bulgarian Baba Marta custom. The media partner of the event is Diplomatic Spectrum magazine.
A special guest craftswoman at the workshops will be Enaki Olesea – an artist and designer, and a PhD candidate in Ethnology at the “Ion Creangă” State Pedagogical University in Chișinău. She will present traditional techniques for making martenitsas using cotton and wool and will speak about the significance of handmade crafts in folk culture.
A bazaar featuring authentic Moldovan martisors will also be organized at the museum in Plovdiv, where visitors will be able to purchase them at symbolic prices.
The workshops are suitable for participants of all ages and encourage joint creative activities for children and parents.
