“A Tale of the Bulgarian Uprising of 1876 in the village of Strelcha” at REM - Plovdiv
Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv marks the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising with a new thematic exhibition. “A Tale of the Bulgarian Uprising of 1876 in the village of Strelcha” is a powerful first-person narrative about one of the most dramatic events in Bulgarian history. It takes us back to a time when the courage, bravery, and self-sacrifice of our ancestors became an example for generations to come.
The exhibition is created by colleagues from the Historical Museum – Strelcha and includes 12 bilingual panels presenting the key moments of the uprising in the village of Strelcha—from the preparation and enthusiasm to its brutal suppression. Through them, visitors can experience the self-sacrifice and determination of the Bulgarians who rose against an empire in the name of freedom.
At the core of the exhibition are the memoirs of direct participant and eyewitness Milyo Todorov Baltov, who describes the events he lived through in remarkable detail. His account reveals both the heroism and the tragedy of those fateful days in 1876.
The exhibition can be visited in the museum courtyard in the Old Town (free admission) starting from April 17. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv will also be open to visitors on April 20 (Monday), with working hours from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
