The exhibition “From Dionysus to Trifon Zarezan”, dedicated to vineyards, wine and merriment, will be present at the Regional Ethnographic Museum – Plovdiv throughout February. It tells the story of the succession of the pagan god by a Christian saint and what his place was in the church rituals and folk customs.

In our folk calendar, the holiday of St. Trifon Zarezan inherits the ancient Dionysian celebrations. Even the Thracians, who inhabited our lands, wer
e famous wine growers and wine producers. In his poem “Deeds and Days”, Hesiod (8-7 century BC) advises on grape picking and winemaking:

“When Orion and Sirius reach the middle of the sky, take down the bunches and bring them home. Put them in the sun for ten days and nights, and then let them lie in the shade for five days. On the sixth day, fill the vessels with the gifts of Dionysus” (From “Works and Days”).

The exhibition is an ode to the wine – the only drink having its god during the Ancient times and a saint in the Christian era. The 12 richly illustrated panels will show you legends about the origin and the cult of the most revered god in Thrace – the patron of the rebirth of nature. You will learn about Thrace – the homeland of the vines and the “superb wine”. Wine is food and medicine for humans, but also a gift from the gods, a means of communication with them.

The exhibition presents the different faces of magic, the magical power of plants and its use. It reveals rituals, customs, characters and objects that played an important role in the daily life of our ancestors. Thanks to the illustrations of the Plovdiv artist Dafina Terzieva, anyone who visits the exhibition can get closer to their world. Wonderful are the superstitions about the various spells – how to bring down the moon, turn a person into an animal, protect yourself from a zmei (dragon) or make someone love you. . .

Magic has accompanied the weekdays and holidays of people since prehistoric times. It is a set of actions and rituals done in the belief that through certain means and ways, one can influence their fellow ones, animals and nature. Magic is controlled by people connected to supernatural powers: sorceresses, herbalists, mamnitsa, and vrazhalitsa. They affect life and death in different ways. It is believed that
sorceresses use “secret” knowledge for good or bad, which can help or harm people.

The magic of the Bulgarian people is in the strength of their spirit, which has overcome centuries of hardships and in their beliefs, which have withstood time.

Welcome on March 15, 2023, at 6 p.m. in REM – Plovdiv to become part of the magical experience of the exhibition “Threads I weave and threads I twine, joy and sorrow intertwine…”

We have also prepared surprises for the opening, through which all visitors can feel special and sense the magic of sound.

The project is part of the Legacy 2023 program of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019.

The city’s musical culture is also presented here – the barrel organ, the musical puppet theatre, and the gramophone. An exceptional part of the exhibition is the harmonium of the revivalist Nayden Gerov – the first keyboard instrument delivered to Plovdiv in the 60’s of the 19th century. The piano of the musician Angel Bukoreshtliev completes the story of the city.

When you visit us, you will discover many more interesting facts about Bulgaria’s musical past. An interactive surprise awaits you.
